Jib halyard

Requirements

  • Loads of purchase. (24:1)
  • Continuous control

This does not have to be continuous but it does help. In most races you come around the windward mark, let off (or pull on) the halyard, when you reach the leeward mark and want to reset the halyard you will probably have gybed, so the available line slowly progresses to one side of the boat. The continuous system eliminates these problems.

To achieve the level of purchase required the halyard adjustment runs the entire length of the boat. This length is just enough to allow 3 cascades to be used. The additional purchase is achieved through a 3:1 system at the mast.

The figure shows the layout. The key to the system is the take-up system that is fully balanced. I have used thick elastic as this is only stretched when the user pulls away from the natural lie of the control.

The black block is fixed to the mast foot. the next bloc in the sequence is a high load single with beckett. this is attached to a strong hook to connect to the jib halyard.
