MAIDENHEAD SAILING CLUB

A gusty westerly force 3-4 greeted the 14 Albacores at Maidenhead’s Albacore Open on Sunday April 27th.  With 7 visitors, the turnout was a good one.  Three races were sailed with one discard.

In the first race of the day it was Neville Herbert and Steve Penfold of Datchet SC in 6825 who made the running with Dave and Nick Hammond from Ogston SC in second place in 7920 and the home team of Trevor and Ann Smith in third in 7754. These three broke clear about half way through the race with the other placings constantly changing position behind them.  After a tustle for first place it was Herbert and Penfold who finally finished first, ahead of David and Nick Hammond in second and Trevor and Ann Smith in third.

Following a break for lunch the second race was started with the same course as the first. In this race Herbert and Penfold took a firm grip on the race followed by the Smith’s with  the Hammond’s in third. Again these three broke clear with second and third place changing hands on a number of occasions. It was Herbert and Penfold who finished first with the Smith’s second and the Hammond’s third.

Going into the last race the wind slightly shifted to the south west and the start line was altered accordingly. The winner had already been decided but there was still much to sail for in the following positions. In this race first place went again to Herbert and Penfold giving them a clean sweep, the Hammond’s this time in second with David Humphries crewed by Margaret Clarke another MSC boat, in third, and the Smith’s in fourth.

The final placings were:

1st: Neville Herbert and Steve Penfold (Datchet SC) 6825 2pts,

2nd: David and Nick Hammond (Ogston SC) 7920,

3rd: Trevor and Ann Smith (MSC) 7754
