Winsford Flash Albacore Open 25th Sept 2005

A clash with the Top Club event meant that only one visitor joined the home boats for this Albacore Open event on Winsford Flash. With the west wind coming of the high bank it was a day of shifts, gusts and lulls although this didn’t stop the fleet from enjoying three competitive races. In race one Paul Lennie and Pam Gott (7909) won from Mike Banner and Alistair Mitchell (8067) followed by visitor John Carlin and Sue Sumner (6814 – West Kirby SC). That result was repeated in race two but only after Banner was passed by Lennie with only yards to the finish. The final race saw Stuart Halman and Isabelle Sowley first to the windward mark closely followed by Steve Dawson and Judith Twambley. As the race progressed Lennie got to the front just ahead of Banner to record his third bullet and win the event. Prizes were presented by Commodore Simon Duggan as the crews enjoyed a well-earned drink at the bar – particularly Ken Ayrton and his crew for the day Chris Simpson. Ken is close to 80 years old and still sailing Albacores!
