The forecast was for rain and 22kts
of wind and while it didnt come up to that level there was
certainly a good mix from 5-15kts at various times.
In race 1 all eyes were on Andrew and Ingrid
Callum from Canada, they were the unknown quantity, unfortunately
after whipping their old borrowed boat around to finish 4th, they
had to sprint for the shore for fear of sinking, Crawford Reid
and Issy Martin were 1st with the Shetland duo of Angus MacNeil
and Jeff Dobson 2nd and Dick and Alan
Downie 3rd
Race 2
The Canadian crew were still ashore arranging another boat and
while the wind dropped slightly the finishing positions remained
the same as the previous race.
Race 3
After all sorts of promises to her owner, Andrew and Ingrid started
race 3 in AL7768 and after a good tussle with The Ptarmigan
went on to win followed by Reid and Martin then Ken Barcly and
Ian MacBride from the home club.
Race 4
Sunday morning started with little chance of sufficient wind,
but as the boats assembled at the line, racing did get underway
after only a brief postponement for the wind direction to change
some 90 degrees as the breeze came in.
Angus Macneil shot away from the windward side followed by the
Dick Downie and the Canadians but as time went on and the wind
and tide became more fickle, Reid pulled through to 2nd place
at the last mark and just stole 1st from the Shetlanders followed
some time later by Downie for another 3rd place and 4th to AL
Canada.
Race 5
The breeze built up a little but while it rained just as heavily
know-one could catch Dick and Alan Downie who seemed to find a
5th gear from somewhere, meantime Crawford and Issy had swapped
over for the last race and were having a great fight with both
Angus and the Canadians, at the finish it was Dick Downie 1st
Andrew Callum 2nd by the thickness of a forestay and Angus MacNeil
in 4th, which was promoted to 3rd once Issy and Crawford Retired.
Thanks were made to the club and
Committee for the running of an excellent Regatta
Souvenir shirts were presented by the club to Andrew and Ingrid
from Canada and Angus and Jeff from Shetland, and on behalf of
the Scottish contingent, Andrew and Ingrid were also given Championship
shirts as a memento of their visit.
