Inlands at Rutland

Conditions on Rutland Water were
more sea-like than the calmer waters expected for an inland championships
though 18 Albacores managed to enjoy the Force 5 to 6 winds that
remained for most of the weekend event.
Following a thought-provoking training day run by Albacore expert
Michael McNamara on the Friday there were three races back to
back on both the Saturday and Sunday - quite a shock to the system
though lunch in the lee of the flooded church was a welcome respite.
Despite not sailing his boat since winning the Nationals in August
last year, Orlando Gledhill and his crew John Frary (Queen Mary
SC) stormed off the line in Race 1 sailing flatter and faster
than everyone else. They held the lead until the finish, setting
a similar pattern for the remaining five races! Behind there was
more of a battle with four boats fighting it out. Neville Herbert
and Steve Penfold (Tamesis SC )managed to get the better of Judy
and Paul Armstrong (Scaling Dam SC) and Matt Potter and Mark Fowler
(Notts County SC) just pipped Jean and Derek Simmons (South Cerney
SC). By Race 3 the wind was up to Force 6 so by Saturday night
all the crews were so tired that the usual drinking the
bar dry was given up for a hot bath and an early night.
Sunday dawned with the wind still up and cold with it - enough
for some to stay on the shore. The racing followed a similar pattern
to the previous day, though the wind did eventually ease as the
sun came out, and even when Gledhill slipped behind he was able
to recover to eventually win with six bullets less his discard
of one!
The event was shared with the Kestrels and Wayfarers and our thanks
to them and Rutland Water SC for a well organised event. The next
Albacore Open event is on Sunday 6 May at South Cerney.
