REPORT

2008 Albacore Nationals were held at Looe Sailing Club over the 3 days 12- 14 July and were won after a closely fought contest by sailmaker Mike McNamara crewed by Felicity Foulds from defending champion "Mr USA Albacore" Barney Harris crewed by Emma Johnston.

Mike and Barney together won 6 of the seven races and had equal points at the end of the contest and were only separated by a countback. The only other race winner was fourth overall Mary Rook, who won the sixth race and a cup which had been won by her grandfather exactly 40 years previously.

Third overall were Neville Herbert and Steve Penfold who led several races but did not appear to have the boatspeed necessary to hold off Mike or Barney

The 40 entries enjoyed 3 days of consistently good winds and excellent close fought racing well run by Roger Hocking and his team from the host club. What an example to other clubs are the friendly and helpful guys from Looe!

As well as Barney there was one other North American entry Warner Monteiro from Canada, who finished 8th, sailing with his brother Andrew. They were trialling a new “double-glazed” jib (with additional higher-up window) which was well received

The first of the brand new Ovington/Speed Sails Epoxy boats created much interest and despite the first race of the championships being its first time on the water, finished fourth overall, (despite its enthusiastic crew – the author of this report- falling overboard in one race)

The old boats prize was won by boatbuilders Chris and Anita Somner from Poole in an immaculately restored 1960s boat “ Blue Streak”

Next year’s UK Champs will be run in conjunction with the biennial Albacore Internationals at Largs in Scotland. Some of the expected USA and Canadian contingent will bring their own boats but others will be looking to charter good quality UK boats. Kilts and sporrans will not be compulsory but hopefully malt whisky tasting will be on the menu.
