The Albacore Dinghy

The Albacore is a great first boat for those who are just learning to sail and a very competitive racer for more advanced sailors. It is a fast and lively while being relatively easy to learn to sail and race. A fully adjustable rig and adjustable sail controls allow a crew to depower in high winds - enabling both light and heavy crews to race head to head. A very versatile boat, it is often sailed by husband/wife and parent child combinations. Those looking for a simple to learn, yet high performance sailing dinghy can join the ranks of Albacore sailors who come from all walks of life and range in age from teenagers to masters pushing 80 years of experience. The Albacore is a boat that is both simple to get into at first, and one which will challenge your tuning and tactical skills for the rest of your life.

John Herbert

It is with great sadness that I advise of the recent passing of life long Albacore sailor John Herbert. John was runner up at the 1971 Nationals, won the Nationals in 1972, before winning the 1973 World Championships in Plymouth sailing with Ray Blake against 148 entries.  John continued sailing Albs through the 80 and 90’s at Parkstone Yacht Club with various crews and started attending opens again in 1998.  In 2007, aged 71, John raced to 5th at the Swanage Nationals as well as travelling on numerous occasions to the USA to race in the North American’s. John hung up his dinghy boots at age 80 but not before buying a family cruiser and continuing to race regularly in Poole harbour.

The family are holding a funeral service at The Church of the Transfiguration, Chaddesley Glen, Canford Cliffs, BH13 7PF on Friday 25 November at 14.30 followed by a Wake at Parkstone Yacht Club, Pierce Avenue, Poole. All members and fellow sailors who knew John are very much welcome to attend.
