ALBACORE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS LYME REGIS

Day 2

Normal Albacore service was resumed at Lyme after strong winds with big waves prevented racing on the Friday. There was still plenty of waves and the wind gusted to 20 knots but three long races were sailed, the first two won by USA Alabcore ace Barney Harris and crew David Byron whilst current National Champions Will Gulliver and Steve Graham took the third.
Competition for places was tight with current European Champions Judy and Paul Armstrong scoring a 2nd as did former National Champion Michael McNamara and Filicity Foulds. Local family crew Mary, and dad, Jerry scored a third in one of the races. There were plenty of thrills and spills in the challenging conditions and everyone was tired but ready for the BBQ afterwards. All to play for tomorrow, Sunday, when the final three races will be sailed. Full results and photos to follow.

Judy & Paul's Boat is a Knight & Pink Woof not a Young, in 4th place.

Interesting that this year wood boats featured more in the top 10 than last year.

Last year was perhaps considered to be the year of the white boat with only three woodies in the top 10.

This year there were only 4 plastic boats in the top 10 (the top 3 of those being Polyester Speeds).

Just shows that it depends on what the crew is made of rather than what the boat is made of.

1) Woof

2) Speed

3) Woof

4) Knight & Pink Woof

5) Kingsfield

6) Speed

7) Speed

8) Ovington

9) Woof

10) Woof

Its good to see both woodies and white boats competing on level terms -all very healthy for the Albacore class going forward. Also interestingly I believe there were several different sail makers / masts represented in the top 10. I think there were a couple of boats in the top ten (Barney and Judy) with rams rather than struts. Just goes to show its down to the one holding the tiller and the crew to get a good result - as it should be.

Its taken two days to extract all the salt crystal from various parts of my body - always a good sign of a great weekend sailing
