Seeing how you lot all seem to have had a ball at the Inlands. My son and I might have a go next year. We have a measurement certificate from the previous owner, so how do you go about having it changed to our name? Also what is the 25 Year Rule? Our boat is a 1985 Rondar so can she only race for another four years? By the way we are not serious contenders, but looking for a few adventures before he goes off to college.

If you look at JohnW's post earlier in this topic, you will find the link to the RYA. If the boat has a valid one, they should be able to help.

I have bought an Albacore and never thought to ask the previous owner for a mesurement certificate. Will it be possible to get a measurement certificate without paying to have it re-measured. The boat is 7759

I am overwhelmed by the response, thanks everyone.

We did indeed by the boat from Howard and you can still see the faded remains of Kantara on the sides, we are currently racing her at club level at Craven SC near Skipton. It was interesting to get some of the history on the boat. We will re-register the boat and are still thinking about whether or not to keep the name as to the 25 year rule, I thought I saw a reference to it on this discussion board, but a search drew a blank. I must have been having a "senior" moment.

Thanks again,

I have been a measurer for the past 20 years and I have never heard of the "25 year rule" I think you may have been misled. The official stance( in most classes) is that a boat is measured when new, or there abouts, and the certificate is good then until the end of the boats life UNLESS it has been "Substancially reconstructed or altered" . No one has yet defined what a substancial reconstruction or alteration is. For example if you redeck on the origanal carcaseing is that substantial? Most classes think not. If however you redeck and change the layout with new framing etc that COULD be considered "substantiall" but this is not always the case and in any event only the repair or alteration would require remeasureing and because Albacore measurers are about as common as a bag of fog the whole thing is practically accademic anyway. When the owner signs the certificate he/she undertakes to "Conform to the class rules in all respects" so the onus is on the individual to conform. A change of ownership also invalidates certificates but only requires the national body (R.Y.A) to be informed and a new certificate will be issued. Clear as mud innit .Hope this helps.

I think 5844 was called Kantara - you probably bought it from Howard. It used to belong to a chap at our club (South Cerney SC) and before that a long standing member at our club sailed it very well. It was originally owned by a chap called Jack Cullum, who then went on to own Kantara II.

Out boat is over 30 years old, and is still competitive - there are no age restrictions on racing, as long as you have a valid certificate your in.

Looking forward to meeting you next year

Cheers

I re-registered mine this year and also took the chance to switch names.

The cost was Ł20.

I don't know about any 25 year rule either, I was simply told that as long as

she hasn't been re-decked she won't need to be remeasured...so you should

be set to go. I think there is a small discount for RYA members.

The Technical Department details should be on the certificate you have

Hi Andy
If you have a Rondar with sail number 5844 it is more likely to be a 1975 vintage rather than 1985. So already past its 30th birthday. My Rondar (Blackadder) was built in 1977 with sail number 6490.
Im not sure what the "25 year rule" is. Its a new one to me.

The RYA technical department are the people to get in touch with to update your certificate. Details on the RYA website: www.rya.org.uk/KnowledgeBase/technical/measurers/meas urementcertificates.htm

Andy,

You send your certificate to the RYA and they charge a king's ransome to issue a new one in your name!

Don't know what this 25 year rule is - where did you hear about it? We do offer prizes for older boats at the nationals but there are plenty of boats older than your's (including Mike McNamara's I think!). A Rondar called "Black Adder" did very well so they can be made to go well. Hope you can join us,

Dear Andy,

I don't know about the 25 year rule or the certificate. I do know

that they are a very friendly and welcoming bunch. We are new to the

class and quite novice, but could not have been more encouraged and

been made to feel part of the Albacore class. Hope to meet you in

Rutland.
