Hi

My current boom up cover is well past its sell by date and needs replacement. The existing cover suffers from a major design flaw as it has just slots at the shrouds. These are closed ineffectively by two webbing ties which allows water to flow down the cover through the slots on to the decking below. Not too much of a problem if you have an all grp boat but for those of us with all timber designs or in my case a Porter composite with timber decks it is a pain. The varnish in the shroud area is now virtually non existant and before I replace either the cover or the varnish I am looking for a solution. I have scoured the dinghy park at our club and I am truly amazed at the relatively poor designs from many well known names. Most do not have any effective closure or seal at the shrouds and in fact a tarpaulin and string would do better!

Searches on the web have come up with little success excepting one comment from Speed Sails about shroud collars. Are these built into the cover? I would envisage the best solution to be a wrap around collar which seals around the shroud with velcro or similar and maybe again sealing back to the main cover. This might be either seperate or part of the main cover.

I am sure there are others who suffer from the same problem and hopefully someone has the answer. Ideally I would like to purchase a cover that does the job rather than start messing around modifying a brand new one. Either way I would be appreciative of any helpful advice that is available,

thanks

Andy, take a look at Sail Register covers:

www.sailregister.co.uk/boatcovers.cfm

As you'll see they use an Alb for the photo of the flat cover.

Give Mike Rimmer a call, he loves to chat and if you want to know any Alb or Ent history he's your man.

Steve thanks for the input had a long chat to Mike Rimmer who was most helpful and can supply a cover to suit - good price as well. Looks like it also created other interest because he had already received another call as well. Thanks also to Ed but will probably go for the breathable polycotton option,
