Hi all,
Have just spent the last couple of days stripping the hull of 6811, a Young hull, down to bare wood, and noticed some rot along the keel, or at least where the hull and keel/spine of the boat join. Have carved most of the rot away, and was planning on scarfing in some mahogany into the existing hull.
Anyhoo, any tips or advice on scarfing pieces of wood into the hull?
By the way, anyone with a Young hull with circular black stains on the hull should be concerned in my opinion. It appears that some of the joinery between the hull and frames was done with mild steel fastenings, which were then poorly (in my opinion) shielded from exposure to moisture/water/salt/etc. The staining is coming from the corroding metal fasteners, from the inside out it seems.
Anyone else have the same experience? I was mildly shocked to be honest, as I assumed the builders would have used bronze or even stainless screws. But then again, I wonder if the boat was expected to have a 20+ year life span?
Thanks
