I have purchased a Woof with North sails and I am looking for guidance in setting up the rig. The previous owner's calibration marks were personal to him, generally setting it up by feel and he is not available to assist.

I have follwed the North tuning guide which advises measuring rake by loading the jib to 200lbs and then swinging the forestay back to the black band at the gooseneck, marking that and then re-attaching it and measuring down to the forstay fitting. The distance required is 86cm. It then adds that Ontario boats may be 75. I have done this and it is nowhere near this. Has any one any suggestions? The Mac guide is far closer and the speed sails guide refers to measuring to the top of the transome. Would this apply to a Woof as well as a Speed Albacore.

Any suggestions would be appreciated before making a final decisions as to whether it is worth setting off for Looe.

Dom I would get packed up and come to Looe to take advantage of the knowledge that will be there. If your boat is not set up on Saturday, it certainly will be by Monday.
If you set up to the Speed or Mac guide, you wont be far off for a start, the Speed is a Woof hull shape.
Note also that there is a 100mm tolerance on the height of the boom in an Alb, most boats are rigged at the maximum height, but if your boat isnt, it will change the rake measurement. Also it is more usual to measure to the bottom of the transom rather than the top, have you checked that this is the measurement point?
Im happy to spend some time with you and the boat if it would help, but there will also be people far better qualified that I am at Looe.

Thanks for that John and we will happily chat with you at Looe. We did attend your training day at Maidenhead but without boat as my old Fairey was being varnished.

We have suffered wit poor weather conditions to get the rig set up without being blown over. Everything on this boat is endless so there are heaps of elastic and spectra lines goin all round the boat. A challenge to say the least.

Thanks for your offer and I am off out now to try and get to grips with the rake.

Hi Dom

I know it might be a picky and Heath Robinson but what ever happened to trying to get all of the sail tell-tales to lift or drop at the same time on a lift or header. If you have the mast up then you can do the same thing by easing or tightening the sheet. At least with this method you are using the full shape of the sail at maximum angle for any given tension.....I THINK!

The simple approach is often the best and on the water that is exactly what I will try and do. However what I am trying to get to grips with is the complexities of jib tension versus shroud tension combined wwith the appropriate rake and to get some datum points set up. Having so many varioables is a challenge until ypu get used to it and I just hope i do and quickly.

Dom, I bought 7754 from Nigel Young who also made the Hood sails I used. He moved to UK North with the same cut (not the same as US). The set up guide he gave me is published on the tuning page albacore.org.uk/Projects/default.htm The measurements are taken from the lower inside corner of the transom. He won the Nationals the following year so they must be close!! Trevor

Thanks Trevor, these make far more sense to me and I have since used them to get some datum marks points. Thanks.
