At the Nationals this year 8062 used an experimental head sail with two windows. I believe it was a development from North America but the sail was made in the UK by Mike Mac.
There followed a discussion at the AGM and members were asked to exspress any views.
I am not sure if this is the best forum for the debate but what the heck here is my view.
I have difficulty seeing through my head sail window when going to windward. I am 6'2" and the window is too low unless I am hiking hard with the boat bolt upright (which is not often as I spend too much time in the pub & not enough in the in the gym).
The jib window is certainly too low for me in light airs when I am sitting on the side deck, is also too low when reaching unless fully hiked, but not too bad when I am goose winged.
I took a good look at 8062 sailing on the Monday and concluded that the jib would certainly be better for me in light and medium airs with a change in my training regime being the cure for the stronger winds.
From a safety point of view I believe the double glazed design with its increased window area is a no brainer, which will benefit helmsmen of all sizes and abilities. At the meeting some one made the comment that it will also benefit the insurance comapnies - so could we expect lower premiums!
Obviously if this new double glazed jib is not as durable then this a big issue. Jibs are alreadly like underwear where you need to change them at least once a year. I am no sail maker but if there is a durability ptoblem could a slightly heavier cloth be used, or a slightly different cut.
Have I missed any other negetives? may be others have different opinions. Food for thought.
