Although I posted some details on this subject under one of the other headings ,they may not have been picked up and I therefore make no apology for repeating myself here.

Largs offers an ideal opportunity to combine a family holiday with sailing in a lovely part of the UK.

Obviously any family holiday's success depends on the weather but for those who enjoy walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and golf in whatever weather, there is much to do.

We ourselves, in the days after the end of the Scottish Champs, visited the islands of Cumbrae, Bute and Arran. On all the islands bikes can be hired and the walking is good. We covered much of the southern part of Bute in a day on foot on well marked footpaths and hardly saw another soul. Rothesay has a super castle and other attractions. You can take your car to all of the islands and of course the ferry journey is always great fun.

On Arran, Goat Fell is well worth a climb, particularly if it's not raining and cloudy!

Inland from Largs there are also a number of good walks some of which can be done from the town itself. One particularly good walk to the south of Greenock is around the aquaduct and reservoir which served the town.

If the weather is inclement or you prefer shopping, Glasgow is within easy access both by bus and train and a trip to Edinburgh is not out of the question.

There is varied accommodation in Largs from self-catering to small hotels and we can recommend the Koh i Nor and Ecco Vino restaurants, although there is bound to be action at the club in the evenings!

I went to Arran a couple of years ago. Goat Fell is one of the most magnificent walks in the UK (if it's clear!).

If you are into your whiskies then the distillery....

is definatelly worth a visit. It's a light coloured peaty type if I remember correctly!

Your right about the whisky Phil, but being a brand new distillery, the first batch of their good stuff is not yet ready. Not to worry though, there are plenty others to sample.

OK so there's a the odd distillery, however for the young at heart and less than one mile from Largs Marina you should check out www.kelburncountrycentre.com/ there you will find lots to do for toddlers to the more sedate customer!
