I broke my Superspar M7 mast racing yeaterday. The mast is snapped quite cleanly just below the goose neck.

I read a post a while back on the USA site of a repair being effected by inserting a sleeve (old laser top mast) inside the mast. Has any one any experience of doing this?

Best regards

Unless the sleeve is a perfect and I mean perfect fit at gooseneck level it will fail. If you can achieve the perfect fit the sleeve would need to extend at least 4feet above the break and the bend characteristics of the mast would be unrecognisable. The only sucessful "graft" I have seen or done is with a Proctor "D" sleeved with a Proctor"C" with its luff track cut off. Wont that nice man from the insurers buy you a new one for Christmas?

Happy new year to all

Thanks for your reply. The nice man from the insurance company can't help me I am afraid. Its a bit of a long story but when I bought the boat it only cost me Ł200. I was only ever going to use it as cheap pottering boat so I only ever insured her 3rd party. Any way things never go to plan and I ended up stripping the paint off and revarnishing etc etc and then I started racing again and spending money on all those exspensive go faster bits. However I just repaid the insurance each year with out reading the policy!

So I need to think should invest Ł450 on a new mast for an old fairey or should I bite the bullet and buy one of those woofy type things? While I am in serious negotiation with my wife I think I am going to have a go at a the repair (unless a reasonable second hand mast turns up) to get me on the back on the water. I will provide feed back on sucess or failure.

Regards

Richard

I still have the proctor goldstick you brought up to Derby a couple of years ago. I'm getting another mast soon so if you want the goldstick back you can pick it up if you still pass by here on business. I've got a trailer you can borrow if you don't fancy putting it on the roof of the car again.

Cheers
