Hi

Whilst in the process of replacing a frayed shroud, a small crack was discovered in the spreader arm, so I have had to purchase new spreader arms

The spreaders are not swing type or adjustable so I need to set them up fairly well.

This is where it gets confusing for me ( I know I'm easily confused)

What should I set the spreader length to, there is conflicting information about in the various paerwork that i have.

One document states a length of 430mm, whilst another 370mm,

And what height should I have, (I have a diagram showing 142mm).

(That is from the back of the mast to the ground)

The mast is fitted to an old frosrite, sail no 6698 and has only limited adjustable, with fly away levers, and no mast rake adjustment (whilst on the water) and very limited pre-bend facility.

Whilst the simple solution would be to put them back as they were, I would rather try and optimise the best position.

Can anyone advise?

Many thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

If you start with 430mm and go from there. The length of the spreader determines how much the mast will bend from side to side, so the longer the spreader the stiffer the mast. With respect to the mast draft ( the distance between the end of the spreaders intersection between tips and the mast, try about 165 mm. The draft effects how much the kicker effects the mast bend for and aft. The more draft the more the mast will bend.

The most importent thing is to check that the mast is up right when looking up the mast and that when you stand back and look at the spreaders they intersect the shrouds in the same plane.

Hope this helps

Phil

Hi Paul

I could not log on earlier and I see that Phil has already given you a starting point, but it has to be just that a starting point. Once you have made sure that the mast is straight you then need to ensure that the right level of power can be achieved. Maybe you can look at Michael Mc's Tuning Guide. What is your all up crew weight?

Cheers Derek

ps I think this was covered in "how to make an old boat fast"
