Hi all,

I thought I would post a subject to see what the UK feelings are on the jib was up for trial last year, as there has been very little said on the subject.

There has been no feedback whatsoever on this trial, yet we are going to allow it at this years internationals! This will only be the limited few that actually took part in the trials, because no more can be made, I have just tried to get one but to no avail.

I think its a tremendous idea and would fully endorse it, as does Mike Mac I think, and they also look really good on the boats!!

Who has taken part in the UK trials? Any feedback? Will the jibs last as long as conventional ones?

I would like to request all who took part (UK, USA and Canada) now put together a report to either sanction, or not, this positive leap forward. We can then get the associations to vote the proposals in or out this year, before they are used in anger.

Regards

Steven

Hi Crawford

Can you clarify that an experimental jib bought during the trial can no longer be used and if it does not pass as a rule change it never will.

My take was that jibs could be purchased during the trial (ie until end of 2008) and then used with disspensation until such time as this was not required, ie that they becamce class legal. If they neve did then they would use the dispensation until either aets time or they fell apart!

We will need to change the NOR/SI's if they can not be used at the internationals.

For the benefit of anyone who does not know,

These jibs were experimental and authorized for use during a restricted period only, this period ended at the close of the 2008 season and a report of their performance and wear etc, returned for evaluation.

So,for the time being at any rate, these jibs are no longer legal and any new ones which may be built will not be legal. I am sure we will all be interested in the results whenever the IRC make them available.

Hi

I have spoken to the sail maker and Dec 2008 was the end of the trial.

So order your standard jib now in time for the new season!

Cheers Derek

ps does anyone know what the end result of the trial was, I thought it was a good safety option

Hi Steven et al

Can I throw some light on this topic. The trial can be read elsewhere. The sail in the picture is from Michael Mac so any info can be got direct from him. So what do I have to say?

The reason that people are being allowed to use them at Largs is so that their investment is not wasted, however previously they have been extra to the two we normally allow. So if you had 4 experimental jibs you could turn up with 6 useable jibs. So the choice is now clear, use whatever jib you like with no penalty, but we have removed any potential advantage

regards

Thanks for clearing this one up chaps. I was obviously looking in the wrong place for info!!I tend to agree with Mark on this one and cant at first glance see a major gain. My rules say the window is still optional.years ago my father was a very competitive Enterprise sailor who refused point blank to entertain the idea of a window. "Whats the point in buying the best cloth money can buy and then sticking a plastic bag on the middle" Just a thought

Sam

The idea is an additional similar sized jib window above, or maybe below the existing.

What happened to the mainsail window we had in the Ent & Fireball all those years ago?

What new jib? Is this another one covered by official secrets? I havent seen a mention anywhere on the web site. Have I just wasted yet more money on somthing which is about to be superceded? A quick outline of proposed changes would be good so I can make my mind up BEFORE the cheque clears

Hi All,

I see no reason why these jibs can't be approved.

There is no reason why they should produce a boat speed advantage.

It gives crews who don't keep there eyes open a better chance of not hitting something.

They look good.

You are correct Derek, we will have to change the paperwork, the dispensation ended at the end of the trial period so, all the old ones and any new ones will not be legal. They are no more, defunked, expired, passed on, Dead.
