Arrived home from work post battling the snow and traffic to find the new copy of ALIVE on the doorstep. What a pleasure on the cold dark winters evening.

A great job from all the production staff & contributors, especially Barney for sharing his secrets from this years Nationals.

Regards

Mine arrived this morning, well early afternoon and it looks a very good publication. So well done to all contributors and to Judy and and Hannah in particular. And I hope in the next edition we can be reporting on Albacores returning to Hamble where they were first built.
Merry Christmas all.

I really enjoyed the read over the holiday period – nice pics too. A great job by all who had a hand in putting it together.

The article by Barney and David is excellent; it’s a tribute to the sport when those at the front share their knowledge with those of us who are further back.

I am trying to understand how Barney measure rake
He writes “for the purposes of this article Rake is measured from the shear mark on the head stay to the upper tip of the boats bow”
I presume head stay = fore stay but where does the shear mark come from?
Does Barney use a fore stay of an exact length? And from this derives a datum point?
I am guessing the clue is in the range 4” to 12” so if I put my mast all the way forward and put a mark on the forestay 4” from the bow tip I have my datum point. Have I got this correct or have I missed something?

Regards

Richard

Hi Richard
Barney showed me this once when the front of the fleet were buddied with the back of the fleet at Looe 2000 in order to pass on tips. As I remember it is measured by swinging the forestay back to the mast and marking the point on the foresay at the height where the sheerline would be marked on the mast [sometimes it is with a faint scored line, otherwise a piece of string across the boat under the decks at sheerline through the mast will do.] Mark the forestay at this point, swing it forward and measure the distance the mark falls short of the bow. I'm just getting round to it myself 10 years on.
Cheers

Many thanks - that all makes perfect sense. I will try this when I put my boat back together. It will be interesting to compare this with other tuning guides that measure rake from mast top black band to inside transom. Measuring the fore stay length seems an easier way to do it rather than running a tape up on the main halyard.

Hope to see you some time in 2011

Regards

Johnnie is right about this and I remember finding an article about it somewhere. I copied it and I think this is the reference to it.

I notice it doesn't come up blue so there may be an error. If it doesn't work, e mail me and I can forward it to you.

Well that didn't work as the link just takes you to another linked site advertising. But I have the article should anyone want it.
