Hello All,

Here is a bit of fun, I am in the enviable/unenviable position of being able to choose what colour I paint our boat.

I have a fairly strong idea of what we may go for but I thought it maybe fun to pole opinion from other class members as to what you would go for given the option?

So although the current weather situation has greatly spedup the process of sanding her back and prepping, this thread might be something to amuse you whilst waiting for the thaw!?

I await all replies however wierd and wonderful with much anticipation, have a good christmas and see you all on the water soon in 2011.

Hugh :)

I would go for a colour which does not stand out in the crowd so that race officers have less chance of catching you out over the line - today with many of the boats GRP this means white I'm afraid.
Back in the days when wooden boats were common, I had a Merlin which looked wooden at a distance but close-up was clearly painted - maximum confusion hooray!

Further on this thread:-
a few years ago "Trimming Strips" ( a strip of cloth of a different colour from normal sailcloth)were applied to yacht genoas to enable the trimmers to judge the set of the sail. A friend thought it would be a good idea on his dinghy but rapidly had it removed when it was an obvious magnet for race officials on the start line - they might not be able to identify most of the premature starters on a general recall but they could certainly see his boat!

Also it always mystified me why anyone would buy the Laser "special editions" produced every so often - they usually had a strongly contrasting hull colour to all the other Lasers

Hugh...

Already loads of red Albs there so you could join that club.

There are many different shades of blue, of which I have always felt 7143 was just perfect but not to be copied, & yes people have tried to match it, but they have come out a shade of grey.

White is the way things are going, or should I say 'Ovington' white, but you don't want to follow the pack do you?

That 'Yellow' boat stood out, 'way out' in the front, with various crews.

We could have had 8155 in any colour, but hey with Nev's starting we can't afford stand out....

You see all sorts of colours in the Alb fleet - and they all look beautiful. Like art, choice of colour is a very personal thing. I think white is a bit dull and as every one knows red is actually a faster colour than white. Aparrently most race officers are colour blind any way. If you have a wooden boat don't paint it white as it will look like a plastic boat.
Barney's black boat looks great - very menacing.
A handful of boats are painted a different colour below the water line, more effort but they look georgeous.
I say go for it and go for somthing striking to brighten up the winter.

Have a good Christmas

Hi Hugh,
Merry Christmas, Ptarmigan has always been red but I did change to a blue/grey for a spell, not unlike the border of this page this was acheived by mixing two tins together. I have since gone back to red though. I have also seen a deep cherry red which looks great on an Alb. I have just stripped back GBR7179 and ready for a coat of epoxy, now that its raining perhaps I'll get on with it.
Cheers
Crawford

OK Hugh how about telling us what colour you are actually going to use.
How about "Gay Pride Pink" - there's probably plenty available cheap, or "Pig Slurry Brown" - I dont recommend the emulsion though.

Well.. I have had a few set backs with the prep and therefore timescale but finally got the first lot of primer on yesterday, this pic was this morning prior to sanding and spot filling.

I agree Barney, after wood mercury/silver would be my choice, mind you it goes against the OCS brigade.
