I am just in the process off fitting a new strut and I am faced with the question as to where to lead the controls. I origenally going to lead the controls to both sides. However for simplicity I am considering mounting a single control to the centre board case cap with a tailing block so I can pull on it whillst up on the side deck.

I would be interested to see what others do and any suggestions

Richard

Hi Richard,

I have the mast ram and pre bend going to single cleats either side of the centre board case just behind the centre main cleat, as you only use one or the other it works well.

Good Luck

Hi Richard,

I have just finished sorting out 8153. My last boat had the controls on either side of the centreboard case which was ok but it was difficult to adjust the strut while we were beating. On 8153 I have led the strut down to either side so I can adjust while hiking. Strut up is led to the top of the centreboard case as I only use it in a drifter.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Hi Richard,
On Ptarmigan I have the controls tailed to the thwart either side, they are easily taken up even when hiking.
The prebend is a block and jamber under deck at the side of the mast gate, the crew can easily pull it on and push the mast forward at the same time.My mast rake and rig tesion is also at the front of the boat for the crew to adjust.
I would advise plenty of purchase is needed on the ram, I have two triple micro blocks with Dynema and a hook connection.

Cheers

Richard,

Just to reinforce what Crawford has sail I use an 8:1 system with vectran on the first purchase. The kicker puts a lot of load through the strut in any sort of breeze.

Hi Richard,

Just as a matter of interest where did you get your new strut from?

Best regards,

Hugh.

My strut is made from bit and bobs that I seem to have collected over the years kinda scap heat challenge.
I think P&B sell strut kits

If you put a strut on an Alb, it is best to have some reinforement under the fordeck to take some of the load off the foredeck. On my woof I used and old centre main hoop to act as support.

Thanks for your note - Adding the strut has been a bit of bigger project than I first thought. I have put an A frame in from under the deck down to the hog. I made it from some very light straight grained spruce. The load from the strut is in front of this so I have also beefed up the deck rib in front. A very fiddly job. I was suprissed how substantial the crown timber under my deck was. I expect the strut load will be carried across the A frame, Rib and Stem of the boat. I hope its strong enough - the first windy day later this year I will find out! I don't think I have added that much wieght but may be its time to stop eating cakes.
Your idea of a main hoop sounds good to me. Lloyd walker told me he made up an alluminium space frame - sounds very high tech. I guess there a number of way to achieve the same result.

I just remember a quote from the late Colin Chapman (Lotus car fame). Any Engineer can design a bridge strong enough to cross a river, its the clever Enginner who can built a brigdge so light it is only just strong enough to stand and take the load. Sounds like he should have been designing Int Moths!

Guy's I have used a ram on my Woof for a long time, to add support to the deck simply add a small strut (wood or whatever) directly under the deck below the strut fixing and down to the topside of the forward tank, open the tank cover and do the same from the underside of the tank and down to the king plank, do not bother trying to fix it in place with scews and such, just and a small amount of resin paste to each end and jamb in place. job done, simples!

I cut the old mainsheet hoop up to leave a straight piece of stainless. One end already had a plate welded to it. For the other I purchased a yacht stantion bracket which it sat in on the hog. I then screwed the plate to the underside of the deck. After 2 hard seasons I have had no problems.

Before any glue/resin sets make sure you can still squeeze under the deck to do any jobs needed! (varnishing/re-gluing etc). The late Woof has a very tight cutout on the front bulkhead/tank rear and I have to breathe out to squeeze in there
