We are thinking of buying a racing compass before the Nationals. The Tacktick devices are too expensive so I've had a look at what Silva has to offer. I can see how they might help if there is no land reference to gauge headers and lifters. What is the best method of mounting a compass? Any thoughts gratefully received.

Hi Dave,
I have used a Silva for years and I think it invaluable for inland, a two degree header would normally be passed by, but by using the compass and tacking you get a benefit of four degrees over someone who does not, if it only lasts 30 seconds, that is easily a couple of boat lengths, and if Tewkesbury is anything as fickle as Strathclyde Loch you need to get one.

I made a bracket for mine which is fitted to the hull(and therefore part of the hull weight)and sits at the inner edge of the foredeck across the mast gate.

Crawfy,
Many thanks for your input. I may look at the new Wot-tac too.
