I recently received a top cover for my old Fairy built Albacore from Hyde sails. It's a lovely cover, but the cut outs for the shrouds are 2 inches to far aft and 2 inches further outboard than the shroud position on my boat.
My question is: are these positions fixed class measurements, or is there/ has there been some change in shroud positioning?
I hope someone may be able to shed some light on this for me.

Mike.

Hi Mike.
My Hyde cover is great quality and perfect when trailing, but as soon as the mast is up the shroud positions are 2 inches aft from where they want to be. I had mine remeasured and recut. You would be wise to drop Hydes a line and Im sure they will be able to assist.

My 1997 Rules specified a maximum shroud distance from the aft face of the transom so even then they could differ considerably from boat to boat.

Looking at the 2013 Rules on this site, I can't find any measurement of shroud position so no wonder cover makers are guessing - my recent Banks cover fits my 1992 boat perfectly.

Hi Graham,

Please see page 17

Longitudinal distance from hull datum point as defined in D.2.3 to shrouds at deck ....................................................... . 2795 mm

This measurement that is scrutinized on a regular basis, as it is normally as far forward as the rules allow.

Hope it helps!

Hi Mike

You could try experimenting with where you have the mast raked when putting the cover on, especially if it is a boom up cover.
I find that letting the mast rake furter aft when putting the cover on makes my cover fit more snugly.
This may also help in your case, if the mast is further back, the whole cover can sit a little further back on the boat which may help align your shroud holes.
Slackening off the forestay to do this will also ease the shrouds and again help things align.

Thank you for all your helpful comments. It's a flat cover, so raking the mast won't really make much difference. I'll go and take a measurement from the transom and see if it corresponds to the 2795mm. Presumably this is the maximum distance allowed and mine are somewhat aft of this. I'm hoping Hyde will take the view that its their responsibility to rectify. It sounds like its something that should be checked when ordering a cover.
I have to say though that it is a thing of beauty other than the shroud position and it does a great job of keeping the weather off when the mast is down.

I had exactly the same problem with a boom-up cover from Morgan Sails, but Ian sent me a replacement-excellent service (and a great cover!)
