Delighted that Albacores will be joining us in the Nore Race on Sat 23 June. You are most welcome. It's a long sail from Southend Pier around the Thames Estuary, about 17NM+, usually more that four hours racing. And there are several hours before and after waiting for the start and the tide to get back. Quite a challenge. Quite an achievement just entering. You get bragging rights straight away! About 100 boats enter; dinghies will start 11:50 and cruisers 12:00
For a very full day come to Benfleet Yacht Club and catch the tide at 09:33. You should be back by 8pm. For better access to the water talk to Alexandra Yacht Club or Thorpe Bay Yacht Club and arrange to launch there. All the clubs in the area provide support boat cover but it is a large area of water so be prepared as best you can and seek help from a passing yacht if needed. Nearly every sort of sailing boat can enter so you will be mixing with every sort of dinghy and some very majestic large yachts.
The tide is late this year relative to the start time and the tide will be running east, so try and avoid being swept over the start line. In the south of the estuary the Medway will be squirting water to the east as you are sailing west. So keep near the Sheppey shore which is two metres deep with less tide over a wide area. And maybe a bit of a back eddy near Sheerness!
Whatever your race result please come to the prizegiving on Friday 29th June. All your crew, family and friends are welcome. And someone has to win the trophies - might be you!.
