Well has anyone received their Alive?

I know they have arrived in America, as I've had a response, but not a peep from anyone in the UK. :)

Jean my Alive arrived last week - Great to catch up after what seems like a long winter hybernation.
Inspired I sent my entry for the Nationals off today too!

Hi Richard - that's great news! We've entered already, so there is at best a 50/50 chance of winning the jib! I'm really looking forward to getting out on the water again.

Cheers
Jean

Hi Jean,

Can you ask Michael McNamara for some more detail on number 2) in Technical Corner?

I can see that the issue relates to the curve that you can see on the foot/clew of the jibs in this pic here: albacore.ca/photos?g2_itemId=33853

However, I'm not sure what the 'problem' is with this curve? Presumably these sails measure, so what are the 'fears on sail longevity'?

As I'm after another jib this year I don't want to spend a few hundred quid on something that might be illegal in a few months time!

Thanks,
Steve

Apparently "the jibs concerned have approx. 150mm more curve than those in the photos. They need extra stiffening to support that extra amount otherwise they would flap. It has to be substantial reinforcement. Reinforcement that will not bend but even so it will degrade when it hits mast, strut, deck etc and so will crumple and craze and the sail will flap and then the cloth will deteriorate…..and the sail not perform…

Our rules do not allow more than 2 jibs per certificate year and so jibs have to be built strongly. Even if these jibs become illegal existing sails cannot be made illegal under our grandfather routines. In any case it will take some time to create a rule. Get agreement and then pass it into law."

Hope this helps
