Bright sunshine and a warm westerly breeze greeted the five visitors and seven local boats for this year's Albacore Open meeting. Bacon cobs were on hand to prepare us all for the day, and after ascertaining that no lead boat was needed for sailing round two marks, race officer Simon Limb got the first race under way at 11am.

Albacore 2013 Northern Championships

A strong fleet of twenty Albacores sailed the 2013 Northerns, including two previous championship winners, Michael MacNamara and Judy Armstrong, a number of open circuit regulars as well as some local boats.

After an introduction to the West Kirby beach launch process to maximise racing time available, RO Chris Hoppins got the fleet away to the first of the three Saturday races in a moderate Westerly and strong chop.

Paignton Open for Double-handed Dinghies (PODD)

29th - 30th June 2013

The PODD regatta hosted by Paignton Sailing Club was a resounding success thanks to real summer weather, great organisation and the arrival of many skilled visiting competitors. There were 8 albacores entered enabling them to have their own fleet racing.

Both events were run con-currently. Poole Week having been shortened to four days over the bank holiday weekend and the Southerns to be days 2 and 3 the Sunday and Monday. Scores for the Southerns would also be a part of the Poole Week competition.

With a total of 12 boats pre-entered we were given our own 'Albacore' start from the committee boat in the top triangle of the harbour. A briefing was held at 11.30am each day and racing started at 1pm. The first high tide was around midday with a second high around 4pm. Instructions were given to watch the committee boat signals closely as second races might be started in a different order – this was to have some impact later – and also to note the Sailing Instructions. Well we always do both!

Invergordon Boating Club

The first Scottish Albacore Championships was held in 1963 so this was the 50th anniversary of the first event and even though the Albacore is a one design class I am sure the competitors from 1963 would be amazed how the class has evolved in the last 50 years. The fleet included boats from as far as Scaling Dam Sailing Club in Yorkshire.
